PCT Day 10

5.24.22 || Day 10: 172.2 - 190.5 miles

tldr; summited san jacinto, so many bloops, first trail magic ✨

Most climbing we’ve done all trail. You can preview the elevation for the day in the Far Out app we use as a map and it looked like a healthy heartbeat — up down up down. Then just up forever. We started calling the ups “bloops”. Only two more bloops to go, we’d say, then wouldn’t talk at all for like an hour.

Walked on a knife’s edge cliff today, parts of the trail were washed out. An entire section was just a tree graveyard, the burned out trees blown down by a winter storm. It was a minefield but made the hiking more interesting because of all the scrambling.

Made it to the top of San Jacinto around 2pm! I’d been there before with a friend a few years ago but it wasn’t nearly as cold or windy today. Started the descent and at mile 190 morale was so low, but as they say, the trail provides ✨

Found our first trail magic — a group grilling hot dogs with cold drinks and twizzlers :) and instead of going a few more miles, we stayed and hung out, ate too many hot dogs and camped on a cliffside so the sun would wake us early for our huge descent tomorrow.
