PCT Day 4

5.18.22 || Day 4: 61.5 - 77.3 miles

tldr; hot day, got to Scissors Crossing, camped at Stagecoach Trails (first shower + laundry ☺️)

Our earliest start of the trip, we were hiking by 7:30. Definitely late by some people’s standards but our circadian rhythms are adjusting. Hopefully.

It’s the desert so we spent the day hopscotching to water sources. Ate breakfast about 90 minutes into hiking which I honestly prefer. I expected to be starving when I woke up like I am in real life but oddly I’m not. And eating after we’ve hiked for a bit makes me more motivated to get going.

We been leapfrogging a few of the same hikers the past few days — a guy named Flintstone, a couple from Columbus, Ohio named Mike and Alexis, various other people I know by sight but who I only ever exchange a “hey there again” as they pass us or we pass them. There are a lot of people already on trail but so far it feels like everyone is desperate to get through the heat of the desert so we haven’t chatted too much.

Made it down to Scissors Crossing around 2:30 pm. It’s an underpass in the middle of the desert with a few chairs, gallons of water, and some coolers (that were sadly empty when we got there). It’s stocked by trail angels in the area and it was such a welcome oasis.

We started planning out our next few days and realized that if we waited until our first zero day, we wouldn’t do laundry or shower for like 9 days. So instead we hitched to the Stagecoach Trails RV Park a few miles up the road.

We drank kombucha, ate yogurt, showered, did laundry. Felt sooo good to rest during the heat of the day. Opted to camp at one of the sites on the property rather than get a little cabin because there was no one else around. Shortest day so far (15.8 miles) but definitely needed. Tomorrow we’ll climb up to the Third Gate Water Cache.
